Registration is now open for the SICSA education event this Friday entitled ‘How to Inspire the Next Generation of Women in Computing?’
This event will run from 1pm to 5pm on Friday the 14th of March with both a networking lunch and a wine reception to follow. This event aims to bring together member of the academic and industrial communities to learn from each other how we might be able to raise the number of young women considering careers in Computing. There will be both a networking llunch and a networking drinks reception. Ms. Robinson MSP who has equaliy in her portfolio will be in attendance and addressing the meeting.
The schedule for the event is as follows:
1pm to 2pm lunch
2pm to 2:15pm Introduction to the event – Dr Karen Petrie, SICSA Director of Education
2:15pm to 2:30pm Address by Miss Robinson, MSP
2:30pm to 2:50pm Lynsey Bowes, VP JP Morgan talking about schools outreach programme in Glasgow in association with STEMNet
2:50pm to 2:55pm Student 1
2:55pm to 3pm Student 2
3pm to 3:20pm Prof. Jane Hilston, University of Edinburgh talking about how Informatics recently became the second department in the UK to achieve the silver Athena Swan award (there are no gold awards).
3:20pm to 3:25pm Student 3
3:25pm to 4pm Student 4
4pm to 4:20pm Rebecca Hastings, Senior Consultant at Harvey Nash and a Global Ambassador for Women in Technology within the Group talking about:
· Overview of research Harvey Nash have done in this area
· Key challenges women in technology perceive about their careers
· Different career paths, not everyone starts out a programmer
· Opportunities for careers in technology in Scotland
4:20pm to 4:25pm Student 5
4:25pm to 4:30pm Student 6
4:30pm onwards Networking Wine Reception
We have asked all of the students (female computing students from a number of Universities through out Scotland) to give a brief (5 minute talk) on what inspires them, hopefully we can learn from their experiences.
