mobile devices: local authority policy?

Highland are working with fujitsu as a managed ICT service. The authority are looking to develop policy for the use of devices such as the iPad but there is a deep mistrust of them on the network from an information security perspective.

Could anyone help and let me know what other local authorities are doing with regards to mobile access ( school owned equipment and pupil owned)

    Thanks for your help

    Hi Chris,

East Lothian Council are currently not prepared to allow kids or staff to connect any personal device such as mobile phones or USB drives to any networked pc.

We were planning on using Livecode and Android SDK to allow youngsters to build apps for their smartphones.

Unfortunately the council policy will mean installing apps on phones will need to be carried out on a stand alone pc(at additional cost as we don’t have any). Pupils will also need ELC approved USB storage devices(another additional cost) to move their software from networked pc’s to the stand alone. In my opinion we are going back in time here and throwing money away.

We are proposing to bring Computing Studies to youngsters which is not only in harmony with CfE but engages kids by utilising the technology which they already embrace.

It’s very frustrating to say the least.

I sympathise with your situation Jack.

May I ask, does your LA allow school owned mobile devices on the network?  The reason I ask is that I purchased a Nexus S and am looking at either an iPad or Android tablet to help engage the kids in programming (using LiveCode as well!). Although we use Fujitsu as our managed ICT provider so I am still negotiating with them to have it installed (even though we were given it for free!)

Unfortunately the council are very concerned about information security and are not keen on using iPads (even school owned ones) in school.

    Hi Chris,

Sorry for taking so long to reply. As far as I’m aware council owned equipment is ok to use on our networked pcs.

    Jack
