NPA updated – units and ASPs coming soon.

The NPA Computer Games Development has been updated this year and the new units will be available soon on the SQA website. Following consultation with several schools and colleges, the assessment requirements have changed, reducing the number of ‘short reports’ and focusing more on the core topics.

ASPs are also in development and will be available for the new session. (Yay!)

There should be no real issues for teachers transitioning to the new units, as the main topics haven’t changed.

The biggest change is to Development Level 6 ONLY, which now requires coding to be used in the development of a game. This will impact only a few centres which offer this unit (of whom most are using coding anyway).

There was a blog post yesterday (Fri 27th Apr) from the SQA Computing Team, which included details of the units.

So are these live units from August? I notice from the course spec that

The revised units will replace the existing units in August 2020. Until that time, the following
transitional framework will be used for learners who possess units in the existing award.

Yes, they can be used from now on, but for learners who may have an existing unit, they can study either the old or new units and still gain the NPA. So if you did the old Design unit this year, and the new Media Assets and Development units next year, you’d still get the NPA.

Thanks, that is what I thought.
