The SQA have a National 5 Computing Science webinar scheduled for Wednesday 3 May, running from 16:30 – 17:30. The purpose of the webinar is to provide an overview of the revised course specification, question paper and coursework components and it will be an opportunity for questions to be asked/answered.

Places can be booked on the webinar by visiting the following link – http://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/58475.html. I would appreciate it if you would forward this link onto any colleagues who think would be interested in tuning in.

I’ve tried to book a place on the webinar but it’s showing as “Booking unavailable: Maximum spaces reached”. Given the significant revision of the arrangements for next session, all CS teachers need to be able to participate in this.

I would also hope that SQA offers some kind of event in June to help colleagues prepare for the new course, as it has done in the past.

Yeah, same here. Why is this the case considering it’s an online event? I’m struggling a bit to comprehend the need for this limitation.

It seems the Modern Languages webinar still has some spaces left though!

What an absolute farce! The SQA again making things as difficult as possible for teachers.

Jeremy – Agreed, it would be great if there was an event in June, but I’m not holding my breath!

    What an absolute joke.

Be interesting to see how many people are actually in attendance at the webinar. Perhaps their solution isn’t fit for purpose considering how many people I’ve spoken to haven’t been able to register?

Either way, if anyone manages, a transcript / minutes would be appreciated.

I have just booked a place on the webinar.  Maybe worth another attempt.

I also tried to book a place on the webinar, but it was full. I therefore emailed SQA Customer Services as well as Robbie Paterson (our Qualifications Manager) to see if I could get a space. Initially, the answer was no, but after I sent a follow-up email, Robbie replied to say that more spaces have now been made available. I’ve booked a place, but I suspect it could fill up quickly again, so don’t delay.

Apparently the webinar tomorrow will focus on the revised course spec, highlighting changes in the mandatory skills, knowledge and understanding and with the assignment. A recording of the webinar will be available via SQA’s website for any teachers who aren’t able to participate or don’t get a place.

as at 11.43am 2/5/17, it is not letting me book, as places are unavailable. Why make this such a difficult process and can more places please be made available.

Thanks so much for that Martin, that’s really helpful. I tried to book again earlier today but it must have been before the extra spaces were allocated.

    Thanks Martin! That was interesting…

Sorry everyone, got an email from SQA telling me to take the video down.

Thanks for uploading the video.  I just watched it (though I see it has been taken down now), and the Q&A was a bit of a car-crash.  I felt the “answers” to serious concerns were extremely condescending and dismissive.  The amount of planning, preparing and assessing that we will now have to do to ensure that pupils are able to complete the Assignment is incredible.  Not to mention that most people will be teaching this brand new course (because that’s what it is) this month.

The parts that were removed don’t come anywhere close to making up for the parts that were added.  The first bullet point under ‘removed’ wasn’t even a removal.  It was an addition of structure diagrams and flow charts.  The removal of contemporary developments isn’t a removal either, because it was never really assessed in the first place – it just sat there.  The removal of searching, sorting and calculating using software is the addition of being required to write the SQL instead of relying on the Access query designer.  The removal of calculation of file sizes now removes context for the need for compression – something that seems to have more emphasis now.

As if we don’t have enough work, we now have even more but are being told that we don’t.  Who makes these decisions?  Who is consulted?  I don’t remember being asked about any of this EVER.  I just see new documents with more and more work required EVERY SESSION.

No wonder teacher numbers are at an all time low.

Thanks to all who have shared materials on this. Is there any sign yet of the official SQA release of the presentation in the webinar or the video?
