Just wondering if anyone is going to attempt the Nat 5 Value Added Unit called Games Review??

At our last regional INSET day we looked at all the N4 ADV and N5 coursework assignments and we all pretty much agreed that the only one we wouldn’t do is Games Review. Certainly the other ADV’s and assignments are very similar and pretty straight forward.

For my definite N4 pupils i think Games Review is a decent task and is keeping them busy while other press on with N5.
I think the creating whole site in HTML is too time consuming so not doing N5 Games Review. I am doing Language Tutors at N5.

I would imagine they wouldnt expect a student to write code for a page counter? Or do they?

There are lots of websites that will create free webcounters.

I like http://www.hitwebcounter.com/webcounter.php as there is no sign-up required.

The pupil just needs to choose the required style and number of characters, and the code is generated automatically, ready to be inserted into the page.

However these will only work on pages that are actually on a webserver – but there’s nothing to stop pupils faking it when they generate the code.

    Hi Peter

That was going to be my next question about requiring a web server. I think if that issue gets resolved then it possibly could be an attractive task.

    Cheers

Just so you know the counters genreated by http://www.besthitcounter.com/ do not need to be on a server to work, any machine connected to the Internet will do. The site does ask for URL for each page but this is just used as a unique identifier for each page and does not have to be a valid URL. We are using a random 4 digit alphanumeric code for each pupil plus the name of each page e.g yi8w_dungeonworlds.

As far as we can tell the HTML does not have to be complex, as long as there is text, images and hyperlinks the pages wil fulfil the specifications

Has anyone heard anything from SQA reagarding the program counter? I am confused as to why it is in there at all when server side scripting isn’t in the arrangements and program counters aren’t something you see much of these days anyway. However I’d quite like my N5 pupils to do the web site in the Games Review task as they have already done lots of practical databse work for the unit assessment and I don’t want to put them off with even more.

I originally planned to spend a considerable amount of time on the AV/coursework but unless I have missed something it seems they can be done quite quickly.

In case anyone else was unsure about this, here is the response from SQA:

All we expect the candidates to do is use a counter available from any of the free sites such as http://www.free-counters.co.uk or http://www.dreamsight.co.uk/software/counters. It’s very easy but allows the candidates to use something professional looking.

Has anyone printed the evidence of the HTML code yet? We use Serif Web plus, and each page can have as much as 15 pages of HTML that needs printing. Thats for one page, and the SQA are asking for all pages to be printed as evidence

    Any suggestions?

    Hello Ray

The instructions for candidates say on page 3, “You have to develop the website in HTML, rather than using a web authoring package”, so you may have to work out how to extract the core HTML sections out of the 15 pages of padding that Serif Web Plus has produced for your pupils.
