Folio Approach – Prior Verification

    Hi All,

    Quick question…

I fancy doing the folio approach for the ISDD unit at N5 and N4 and asked the prior verification service if I would need all tasks prior verified. I’ve had a reply back

“I have been in touch with the Principle Verifier and he suggests that you send a request for Prior Verification.”

Just wondering if anyone else has has been through this process for folio approach?

    Cheers,

Depends surely if you are using the SQA package 2 – portfolio approach or doing small tasks yourself.

There are no tasks in the package 2 just exemplars. I had hoped to use the supertasks in the How to pass book as part of the portfolio approach. Which I would have thought met “Naturally occurring evidence”

Naturally occurring evidence may also be generated during learning and teaching activities. This is particularly relevant for skills which are being developed in a progressive way. Such skills, related to specific Assessment Standards, may be demonstrated with increasing skill and independence by a candidate on many occasions during the delivery of the Course. It is likely that the assessor will be using regular observation and formative assessment techniques to monitor and support the development of these skills.

However, if I submit them as “assessments” then they can’t be given sight unseen.

    Any thoughts

Sight unseen is not imperative for unit assessments. If you have witnessed pupils undertaking activities that meet the assessment criteria and you can provide evidence that the standard has been met, then all is well.
That’s my tuppence worth from attending various SQA verification sessions.

And that is the nub of the point Tracy raises. Would all of our material have to be pre verified?

Nothing actually HAS to be pre-verified. The service is there to partially to provide you with peace of mind knowing that if you have been prior verified then your materials can never be deemed unsuitable for purpose at any point moving forward.

So no, they don’t have to be prior verified, but considering the process is a free service to centres then why not go ahead and have them prior verified?

I was going to use class tasks as we went along rather than the unit assessment tasks. The tasks included in the folio are therefore more additional tasks s than our pupils currently do and we are trying to reduce the assessment burden on kids. I could incorporate these into class tasks I suppose and remove some of the tasks we have already made.

For this approach, individual class tasks, and the reply I got from SQA prior-verification I think I need to have every task verified.

Whilst I appreciate that we do not have to have our assessments prior-verified I wouldn’t like to go down this route without having them being and then possibly be told later by SQA that my assessments are invalid.

Just wonder if anyone has already done this and what their experience was?

    Tracy
