SQA Assessment Material

There has been new assessment material added to the SQA secure website for the new Higher starting next year.

The SDD unit has code and exemplars in Pascal. I understand these are exemplars but can’t the SQA create exemplars for a few languages that are commonly used? It creates extra work for us in getting our stuff prior verified.

Why can’t you use the example but convert into another language? Does that really need verification?

The SQA have been clear they don’t need verification but I sent a N4 SDD pack 1 and N5 Python pack 1 back in June in the hope the SQA may share these. There seems to be no prior verified material for Computing although I know a number of people sent assessments away?

Of course the wording/tasks have already been changed and the N5 programming tasks changed a fair bit with version 1.1 so I presume my pre-verified assessments may not be good enough after this year?????

I really don’t see why a few hundred people should have to change tasks into VB, Pyhton, BASIC, Java … we are all busy enough without all going and doing the same tasks again and again. You change them and the SQA proceed to fix, update and completly change them after you have done all your work.

SQA have already pointed me towards Education Scotland for ideas and exemplification of approaching Higher. We will have to build all our own course and materials again. If the SQA could maybe make the unit assessments in a few different languages then that may be fair.

I have altered the questions to suit True Basic, which we use in my school currently.

    Hi

Just wondering if any more folk have had a look at the ISDD assessment task from USAP 1. It’s the one about creating a website with supplied materials. Just a few questions…..

It states that videos will be provided – I can’t seem to see any in the supplementary files? Have I just missed it / went blind? Or does it assume that just the audio is ok as the judging evidence table states videos and/or sound. Are pupils expected to find their own youtube clips?

Also, navigation. 3 levels of navigation to meet the assessment standard. Does the 3rd level in this task only include one link to NT3?

I presumed, before reading the assessment, that pups would be expected to make this type of site via a code only approach eg php. To be honest, it’s what I was preparing for. Are pupils expected to use a web authoring application to successfully create this? What of they do all in code?

    Cheers

I am looking at either web expression, Serif Web Plus or Weebly for the ISDD unit. No chance I am going to code the site with just PHP and HTML/CSS.

I’ve not really seen web expression, or indeed used it. Is it something worth investigating? Te fact that it’s free is a bonus 🙂

I’m wondering how the search facility could be implemented?

I’d probably go for the php option,as we still have an old server with php and mysql running on the network. Would a content management solution be acceptable I wonder – Drupal has a site search module.

You can create a custom Google search engine for your site here
    https://www.google.com/cse/create/new

They give you the HTML embed code for this.
