Is minecraft free for educational use? Which version could be used on windows 7? My searches have concluded that a license would need purchased?

No there is a cost involved with using it, in fact Microsoft just bought it. I would think that Minecraft PI edition might need a name change.

Alex we looked at it and it worked out about £400 per suite of machines. They do an educational licence. I had hoped that pupils could log onto their own accounts and use it that way but it won’t get past our firewall… Tracy

Minecraft for the Raspberry Pi is currently free from http://pi.minecraft.net/. Of course, this only saves you money if you have enough Raspberry Pis!

Thanks – FYI I’ve had a quote from http://www.teachergaming.com/ regarding Minecraft Edu…5 suites (105 machines) which is the client license for each machine and 1 server license for each room comes to ~£1000 ($1622.50)

We’d thought about Minecraft but the cost put us off, especially since our budget has shrunk. We’ve found a free alternative called Minetest (http://minetest.net/) and it’s pretty much the same! I’ve tested it out with a class, running a server on my machine and it went down really well. So now all we need to do is figure out what we’re doing with it and where it’ll go in the curriculum

I am currently running a raspberry pi lunchtime group that is getting the pupils to look at the pi and the potential for it. In minecraft for raspberry pi the pupils can edit the program using python which I feel can be useful for teaching pupils in a fun way different programming techniques.
