Curriculum Organisers for S1

    Hi all,

we had an interesting discussion today as an ICT department (we teach a joint ICT course with Business Education) about curriculum organisers to be used for report writing and tracking across the authority.

What are others doing about assessment, reporting and tracking? Is there an authority led process or are you going it alone?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

I take it you are in Fife?
I can’t remember what ones we plumped for but I’ll find out and let you know.

    Hi Kerry,

we use a combination of practical assessments and online electronic theory tests for S1. The practical assessments are assessed using a rubric that has between 5-6 criteria/aspects and four levels of performance within each strand written in pupil friendly language. The four levels are Need’s Improvement, Satisfactory, Good and Excellent and we also have space at the bottom for other strengths and next steps.

The practical rubrics make it easy for pupils to self and peer assess and also to develop a better understanding of what it required to reach a certain level of competence. The electronic assessments allow us to identify individual and class strengths and weaknesses as well as highlight areas where we might need additional activities or a different way of explaining a new concept. We combine both sets of data in a database that one of my colleagues has created and then use this overview to decide what level they’re performing at and whether they’re developing, consolidating or secure.

Peter, what have you created the online E theory tests in?

    Hi Colin,

we created the online electronic theory tests on http://www.yacapaca.com It allows you to create a variety of different close questions with images, feedback and automatic recording of individual results and summaries across a class set.

    Peter,

These look really useful.  Can I join your Author Group to steal these?

I don’t know if I imagined this, but earlier in the week I thought that when I clicked on the yacapaca link I could see the resources that you had created/used, did you change the link.

Obviously there are loads of materials on there, would there be a isted of assignments that you have already tested/used that you would be willing to recommend rather than me trying to trawl through them all.

    Many thanks

    Hi everyone,

thought I’d posted a reply to Ian’s original request but it doesn’t look like it’s been added to the thread. You can find the Crieff High School S1 & 2 ICT and Computing Science tests we’ve created so far by clicking on the Resources tab then going to ICT and the SQA Curriculum for Excellence. You should then be able to preview any of the tests there and I think you can also assign them to your own classes.

Thanks Peter – I;m about to test one of  them out on my classes next week. From the site blurb i originally thought it would be possible to mix and match individual questions from tests, but I don’t think that is possible. Great resource still though.
