App Inventor – Google sign up issues

    Hi,

I’ve been testing out signup for pupils. While, miraculously, it isn’t completely blocked in Fife, every few requests asked me to verify the account via text message! This is going to be quite annoying when signing up pupils.

Does anyone have any tips or feedback from the process?

    Hi,

For the trial, I set up a google apps account and then went through the verification process to get the account converted to a google apps for education account. I could then setup 20 generic pupil google accounts that they could  use to login to app inventor.

    Peter,

Thanks – I was just wondering if the Google Apps for Education accounts would work!  All our students already have an account.

This is all really useful, so thanks for posting. I’ll be discussing App Inventor with people from MIT and Google in July and will pass this on to them.

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

The Google Apps for Education thing – are you using that with the whole school?

We’ve deployed GAfE across the whole authority at both Primary and Secondary.  Each student gets a unique logon and custom domain (@edubuzz.org).  This gives them access to all the usual google tools (that we permit!).

We use Gmail for their school email, docs for collaboration and electronic homework and Sites for an ePortfolio of work.  It does however also allow them to sign into associated sites like YouTube, App Inventor, etc., in fact anything that uses google sign-in.

    Mark.

My pupils and I have had some major signing up issues with Google – even though we are using the user name that Google suggests then Google is telling us that that account is already in use. What I was trying to do was to create some student accounts with my mobile phone number (for the 2nd time) so that I could issue these accounts to students.

We have had large issues getting the emulator to work – so much so that I may give up on App Inventor – my technician has eventually changed the security settings on the accounts so that the pupils can create a temporary folder.

I used App Inventor properly with classes this year for the first time and I wasn’t impressed with how flaky it was. Main problem we have is that we can only get the classic app inventor working rather than the new one. Like John to get this working involved a large chunk of the technician’s and my time for not very much. I was surprised how quickly the pupils got through the ‘I love my smartphone’ notes and how poor some of the apps were at the end. If anyone has any material that they have which takes app inventor to the next level I would love to have it since I just don’t see where I’m getting time to make my own. Also has anyone used the app inventor software that Charlie mentioned in one of his blogs a while ago?

    Hi John,

In my school, the very few pupils that didn’t have a Google account just signed up for one themselves. However, if that’s not possible, I understand that other teachers have signed up for Google Apps for Education and created a batch of pupil accounts that way.

In terms of App Inventor itself, what version of were you using? Classic (v1) or v2?

    Regards,
    Jeremy

    Hi Jeremy
yeh some of the pupils just couldn’t sign up with Google – the usernames that Google was suggesting were then being rejected by Google.
Will investigate Google Apps – I take it it is free?

Using version one – we can’t use v2 as Dumfries and Galloway will not allow Chrome – we are migrating to IE7 after the summer but I understand from my technician that it is not compatible with this but may be in the future. It’s one of the many many hurdles that seem to be set in the way of Computing teachers that other teachers who only have to pick up a textbook or use a powerpoint don’t have!

Thanks for all the help from everybody – much appreciated.
    Best wishes
    John

    Hi peter
just set up Google Apps for Education – its apparently a 30 day trial – how much does it cost after this do you know?

    Hi Jeremy
tried to install AI2 at home last night on PC – windows 7 – no emulator – any other tweaks I can do. (not installed in school yet)

When you are doing the ‘finger Painting’ tutorial in AI2 and using the
    When Canvas1.dragged command
do we now use ‘get PrevX’ etc

in AI1 it was ‘value x’ (see attached document)

    thanks
    John

If anyone wants free Google Accounts on a domain you can use my system at http://glew.org.uk which is fully integrated with Google Apps for Education AND your learners can make their own accounts and create a Google Account – username@glew.org.uk
